Why Summer Prep Matters More in Las Vegas
Most home maintenance advice is written for temperate climates. Las Vegas is different: 110°F days, monsoon thunderstorms in July and August, and dust storms (haboobs) that arrive with little warning. Your home needs to be ready for all of it.
AC System: Most Important
Your air conditioner is a health and safety system in Las Vegas, not a comfort upgrade. A failed AC unit in August can make your home dangerously hot within hours.
- Schedule an AC tune-up in April or early May — before the heat arrives and HVAC companies get slammed with emergency calls.
- Ask the tech to check: refrigerant level, condenser coils, air filters, thermostat calibration, and ductwork for leaks.
- Replace air filters every 1-2 months during summer (desert dust clogs them faster).
- Set the thermostat to 78-80°F when away — lower isn't more efficient, it just runs the system harder.
- Know where your circuit breaker panel is. AC units can trip breakers during peak load.
Pest Prevention Before the Heat
Scorpions, black widows, and cockroaches are most active during warm months. Schedule a perimeter pest treatment in April before nesting season begins.
- Seal gaps around pipes, vents, and door frames — scorpions can fit through a quarter-inch gap.
- Remove woodpile and debris from the perimeter of the house — common scorpion hiding spots.
- UV black lights can help you spot scorpions at night if you suspect they're present.
Pool Prep
If you have a pool, summer is your highest-maintenance season. Heat accelerates chemical evaporation and algae growth.
- Have a pool service professional balance chemicals before consistent 90°F days arrive.
- Check your pump and filter — run for 8-12 hours/day in peak summer.
- Add a dose of algaecide before the first heat wave of the season.
- Water level drops faster in summer — check weekly and top off as needed.
Home Envelope: Windows and Doors
- Inspect weatherstripping on all exterior doors — a gap there drives up cooling costs significantly.
- Solar screens on west and south-facing windows can reduce heat gain by 70-90%.
- If you have window AC units (not central), clean the filters now.
Monsoon Season (July-September)
Las Vegas experiences monsoon thunderstorms from July through September. These bring heavy rain, flash flooding, and haboobs (dust storms).
- Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear — monsoon rains can be intense.
- Know your flood risk. Washes and arroyos can overflow with surprising speed.
- After a dust storm, check your AC's condenser — dust buildup reduces efficiency.
